Fertility Care Q & A

by Mark J. Godat, MD, PA

What is infertility?

Infertility is an inability to get pregnant after having unprotected sex for 12 months or longer. As you age, your chance of becoming pregnant significantly declines after age 35 due to the natural decrease in the number of eggs you have available. Underlying health complications may also affect your ability to become pregnant, especially if you are under 35, including conditions like:

  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)

  • Premature menopause

  • Gland dysfunction

  • Sexually transmitted disease

  • Birth defects

What is fertility care?

Fertility care encompasses a variety of reproductive and fertility services you may need if you are unable to conceive a child or have experienced previous miscarriages. Dr. Godat offers innovative diagnostic services to uncover the root of your infertility issues, including minimally invasive testing, reproductive surgery, and fertility preservation when you have other health complications.

How is infertility diagnosed?

Dr. Godat performs a comprehensive evaluation of your medical history and a physical exam to determine if potential health problems affect your ability to become pregnant. He may also request specific testing to identify possible causes of infertility. These tests may include:

  • Blood work

  • Ultrasound

  • X-rays

  • Laparoscopy

If these tests don’t provide answers, Dr. Godat may recommend your partner undergo testing for health issues or sperm dysfunction.

What treatments are available for treating infertility?

Dr. Godat works with you to develop an infertility treatment plan based on several factors, including:

  • Your and your partner’s medical history

  • Your and your partner’s age

  • Your menstrual cycle

  • Length of time you’ve been trying to conceive

  • Results of medical testing

There’s no universal treatment for infertility, but Dr. Godat always starts with the least invasive method when creating your care plan. For example, he may suggest fertility medications to stimulate ovulation or correct hormone imbalances. If your infertility is related to physical issues in your reproductive system, Dr. Godat may recommend surgery. You may also require surgery if polyps or fibroids are inhibiting your ability to become pregnant.

Dr. Godat discusses your available options during your appointment. He also provides educational materials and guidance to help you make the best decision for your health.
